What do you do all that time' that it said:"Many couples like to stay coupled as the guy grows soft inside the girl. (You should NOT do this if you are relying on condoms for contraception and disease prevention!)" i was just wondering why this is - will the condom stop working? if you have done this, what are the chances of becomming pregnant after this?

I made the comment you quoted. It's good to know that SOMEBODY is reading these posts!
The other responses here explain exactly what I was referring to. The correct thing to do is for him to hold the condom against his penis and withdraw the penis and condom together, as soon as his contractions have stopped. Then take the condom off and dispose of it. Then he should wash his genitals before coming back to cuddle with you. If he becomes erect again, another condom is needed if his penis is near your genitals, even if he doesn't insert it.
Anything less than that significantly increases the chances of transmitting diseases, or becoming pregnant.
Do you have partners who follow this procedure? I'll wager they are few, if any. Does it sound like a pretty unromantic way to end a very intimate experience? Definitely! That's one of the reasons condoms have such a significant difference in effectiveness between their theoretical laboratory performance, and real-world experience. (Put "contraceptive failure rate" into a search engine and look at some of the quarter million(!) hits that come up, such as http://www.youngwomenshealth.org/summarychart.html .) In fact, the way most young people use condoms makes them not much more effective as a contraceptive than the widely-discredited (and properly so) "pull-out method".
If you and your partner are using condoms correctly, good for you! Keep it up!
If not - you are putting a LOT of faith, and trusting your life, to something that is proven to be unreliable. You need another method of contraception and STD control.

i agree with phil. some couples have their intercourse then like to go soft afterwards still penetrating but the penis starts to shrink which means the condom is free to slip off or semen can leak inside which means their is a higher risk of pregnancie so if you want to do something like that also get the pill or implannon.. hope this helps aphexy xx

Uncle Phil has answered correctly... as he usually does, have you considered any other form of contraception?

reader, anonymous, writes (5 September 2008): The condom need to be tight around the penis, and it will be whilst he's got an erection, but once the man loses his erection his penis shrinks, sperm can then leak out or it could just slip off inside you. The condom won't stop working as such, but it will no longer be doing an effective job of keeping any ejaculate inside the condom.
