A reader, anonymous, writes (6 November 2006):

It depends on how much music means to you both.

I think if you are younger, especially, then it is likely to cause problems because younger people especially tend to associate with those who identify with the same music as them.

It's more than just music itself, but with a music preference comes a particular culture, fashion, a set of world beliefs and forms a hugely important encompassing identity role to follow.

Usually when people get a little older music plays less of an important role in defining ones individuality. You can see through peoples different preferences and see their qualities on an individual basis.

TasteofIndia agony auntLet's examine the facts. You really, really like him.... he makes you laugh and you share the sense of humor... you're worried about the kind of music you both like? A relationship can DEFINITELY work. My boyfriend enjoys music that's not my favorite, but hey - we take turns with the CD player.

Not to mention, he teaches me more about his types of music and I teach him about mine. My musical taste has broadened thanks to him.

If you like him, by all means try him out!! Who cares what kind of music he likes? He's definitely not sick in the head, don't you worry.

Good luck!
