I know this isn't the best place to post this but I am hoping someone can give me an idea of my chances. Basically I got a reprimand when I was 15yrs of age for criminal damage I broke two bits of glass out of a cabinet when I threw something in the heat of the moment the owner taught me a harsh lesson and called the police thinking it would only scare me and that would be it.. anyway that was 8 yrs ago and I've never been in trouble since, I've been unemployed for 2yrs after caring for my grandmother who passed away I've been trying my hardest to get a job in care as my dream is to be a nurse and I need my nvq to get into university. As I was a young carer I missed out on a lot of school and never got my gcses at school but have since gained them along with doing a care course while being unemployed anyway I had a job interview on Tuesday (my 8th) and it went so well I was offered a job today I was honest about my reprimand from the start as I got a crb check done myself and it shows anyway the manager has to obviously go by the books and although she has given me a job it has to go to a panel to see if they'll accept my offence.Im so scared that I will now not get the job as I'm gonna be judged by a bunch of strangers who have and never will meet me the manager has told me she really really wants me to work for her and she's going to give me a good report to try and help. She also said if I fail then there is no point in applying for care work as I'll never get anywhere, I can't believe something so stupid and silly that I did as a child has possibly screwed my dream right up. Has anyone been in this situation and can offer some advice please, my confidence has really took a battering over the last two years I fear if it doesn't work out I honestly don't think I'll be able to pick myself up again.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (14 July 2012):

Can you ask the person who called the police to help you out? If you could get an explanation/character reference from them, that would go a long way towards swaying a panels decision. It seems a very harsh punishment to be blocked from doing something now because of a teen temper tantrum 8 years ago. If you have no luck with the person who originally made the report against you, consider consulting a solicitor for advice on this matter.

Hugh.J agony auntAs this was 8 years ago and you were still a minor, at 15, I am as sure as I can be that you can now ask for the reprimand to be expunged from your record. I do hope so, because it would be totally unjust for this trivial offence to haunt you and spoil your career choices.

I'm not sure whom you should ask about getting your record cleaned up, but I would start at your local police station.

Good luck.
