i keep my hair down there just as nice as i keep the hair on my head.my hair down there is actually straght and very soft. i shampoo it and conditon it every other day. i also shave my bikini line and trim it a little. when i shave my bikini line, i use conditioner instead of shaving cream. its up to you, just treat it like the hair on your head.

Later on if he doesn't mind, you can just trim. Shaving isn't all the great for you, that is true. If you can find a place where you can get a good brazilian wax with someone trustworthy, do it. Takes WAY longer to grow back, and doesn't grow back thicker. But, in any case, shaving is free. It's up to you and your level of comfort w/ your boyfriend.
But for the first time, shave... you'll both be much more into it.
