It can't make you infertile, but like the others say it can cause TSS. TSS can be fatal, and you usually don't realise you have it until it's too late as the symptoms are the same a the flu to start with. Make sure that you read carefully the instructions on the box and change them as regularly as possible. Use the lowest absorbancy that you need and don't wear them at night time (some makers claim that you can leave them in for up to 8 hours, but I wouldn't chance it to be honest), use towels instead.

reader, anonymous, writes (12 March 2008): Take them out and keep the area clean. The toxic shock thing is so worrying so be very aware not to leave them in. Why not use a pad for bed time and just use them when you go out. Be safe and be sensible.

Firstly, it is definately not advisable to leave a tampon in for that length of time. Its unhygenic and can cause toxic shock which can ultimately cause death.
There has been no known issue such as sterility or anything like that. But it can cause toxic shock which is serious.
My suggestion is dont leave any tampon in for more than a 4 hour period.
