Hey there. I was just hoping for some advice. My fiance and I are trying to get pregnant, but I'm concerned because he does have a history of weed/coke usage in recreation. He says he will quit for me to make sure the baby is healthy, but I don't know if it will stick. Will the baby be in that bad a condition if he can't stop? I don't do anything.

pgissyd agony auntnewmod has asked me to reread my first post here, and he is correct i made a mistake! I said it was unlikely you would get pregnant, that was worded very badley, you certainly do have a very good chance of getting preggas by him, though the likelyhood is SLIGHTLY less than if niether of you used drugs.

my sincerest appologies for that misleading line.

The following comes from http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/0682.html, posted previously:

"However, it now appears that there is little or no effect on testoterone levels of adults, but that sperm production may be reduced. However, there has been no clear evidence of infertility in males who smoke pot, and the effect on sperm production appears to be temporary and reversible when the smoker abstains."

"Whether typical marijuana use causes genetic damage that is passed on to a fetus is not known, but appears doubtful."

Pgissyd,

Interesting reading. I can attest, though, that I have known literally dozens upon dozens of cannabis smokers who have gotten pregnant or gotten someone pregnant. So, I wouldn't lull someone into a false sense of security by suggesting that it's unlikely to get pregnant if one member of a couple is smoking. Having spent several years going to and then working for American universities, I can tell you that it can and does happen all of the time.

I'm going to have to disagree COMPLETELY with Pgissyd and say that you can certainly get pregnant if your boyfriend is using. Cannabis, in particular, has no effect on fertility.

That being said, you both need to be clean if you're ready to have children. Your b/f's cocaine usage is particularly troublesome as it can cause very serious birth-defects (weed, not so much).

Don't saddle your potential child with a lifetime of health problems you both MUST be clean.

A female reader, pgissyd United Kingdom +, writes (30 November 2007):

pgissyd agony auntFirst of all, its unlikely that you will get pregnant by him if he is using, even irregularly. as it causes problems with the semen, usually causing infertility or lack of fertility.

Second, why would you want to have a baby with this guy who cannot even respect his own body never mind a babies?

Third, if you truely love this man, make sure he has been off the drugs compleatly, with no slip ups at all for at least 12 months. If he uses even once, then its a nono. Even if one of his deformed sperms does make the battle to your egg, what sort of condition would your baby be in? most likely you would misscarry after a few months, and that is far worse than never ever having children. or even than having to wait a year.

Make him stop using for 12 months then try again.

good luck xxxxxx
