I heard that a few warm drops of olive oil will unclog a stuffy ear afer a couple days is this true? Also if it turns out its just an ear infection would the olive oil make things worse? i dont think its an ear infection but just incase i dont want to damage my ears. I cant afford to go to the doctor right now so i want to try some stuff from home. Thank you

Olive oil works fine i use it as I am sensitive to a lot of harsh chemicals and it works just as well and also doesn't smell as bad or feel as bad. It's also the base for a lot of shop bought ones so it's just cheaper and easier. Hope it helps you out x.

A male reader, no nonsense Aidan United Kingdom +, writes (6 July 2012):

Warm olive oil is a home remedy for treating ear wax, it’s not as effective as some of the procedures that doctors can do but if you can’t get to a doctor you could give it a try. Having said that, you might be better off visiting a pharmacist to see if you can buy something over the counter that might be more effective. If you use olive oil, remember that it’s not the quickest way to treat ear wax, so you’ll need to follow the treatment for 2 weeks:

Put half a tea spoon of olive oil in to your ear, twice a day. Each time, lie on your side with the affected ear facing up for between 5 and 10 minutes, aim for 10 if possible. The olive oil should be warm, don’t heat it up too much.

If you do this for 2 weeks and still you have problems, you should see a doctor or at the very least speak to a pharmacist. You might have an ear infection, or the blockage might be too serious for home remedies. A medical opinion from some-one who’s actually seen you is always best where you can get it.

I wish you all the very best.

person12345 agony auntSome people use mineral oil, some use alcohol, some people have a very trusted responsible and careful person with very steady hands use a bright flashlight and a special tool to pull the earwax out. They sell them online, it might be worth a try, but don't do anything that can puncture your eardrum.

It won't unclog an ear OP I, like most people get a waxy build up that I have to remove every 6 months or so, my doctor advised me to use drops of oil after I've unclogged them because oil stops the wax from sticking to the ear canal, it does not solve a blockage at all.

An ear infection would be painful OP, you'd know if it was an ear infection because it would feel quite sore.

If it just feels like you've been swimming and you can feel there's a blockage then go to a pharmacist and get some drops specifically designed for that.

You really should go see a doctor though OP, I haven't heard wax blockage being that common for people your age. Maybe get your parents or a friend to have a look in your ear for you or borrow some cash and go see a doctor, your ears are quite a delicate thing, you don't want to be prodding and poking around in there if you have a serious problem.

A reader, anonymous, writes (6 July 2012):

I briefly just read on google that a few drops of vegetable or olive oil will be useful as the ear wax absorbs the oil which in turn softens and loosens it making it either work its way to your outer ear or just easier for you to remove with a cotton bud. If its anything more serious than wax build up then you may need to see your GP and get them syringed.

C. Grant agony auntUsually what doctors recommend is to put a few drops of mineral oil into your ears over a period of a week or so, but the value of that is to soften the excess buildup of ear wax to make it easier for the doctor to remove. The oil itself won't help you, so if you can't go see a doctor then skip the oil. I don't know about the infection question, but I wouldn't risk it.

So_Very_Confused agony auntI would not use olive oil...

if you have water in your ear a few drops of alcohol works GREAT...

are you just stuffed up and not in pain?

tilt your head with the stuffed ear up...

use either an eye dropper or a q-tip soaked in alcohol and drop one or two drops in your ear... tilt your head more so that the alcohol runs into the ear canal... it feels WEIRD and then it will (if it's WATER) open right up

if it does not... you may have wax in the ear and you could try a wax removal kit like this one:
