I am pregnant, due on July 25th. About a month ago my sister lashed out on me [she has a drug problem, something I'm trying to help her with]. She punched me hard in the back and sides. After that I couldn't stand up and I began to have contractions. I rushed to the ER and they put me on an IV and a device to monitor my contractions. After a few hours they stopped and I was told to stay in bed. They told me that even if I was going to go into premature labor, they couldn't do anything about it as they don't try to save babies unless they are at least 24 weeks gestation. At first I thought that was alright and normal. But then today I read an article about a woman who, five years ago, had her son at 20 weeks! he was in the hospital for a little over a month when he was born, but is now a perfectly healthy 5 year old with only mild health concerns like excema and poor vision. I was very upset by this because if I was to go into labor that early, my baby could have possibly be saved but the doctors wouldn't do it. I know that it's uncommon for an infant to survive that early, but it still happens, and wouldn't anyone want to take the chance? why would they wait until 24 weeks to even try to deliver?

by the way, I am almost 7 months along now, so I know that my baby should be ok, but I still have concerns for other woman in that position.

kissxmexagainx agony auntyeah I figured that out. I just don't see how they could do that. but that isn't the hospital I'm delivering at [even though I live across the street from it]. I asked my doctor yesterday && he said that they will try to save a baby any time it could possible be viable, && yes a lot of times they don't survive but a lot of times they do so he says it makes his job worth it.

kissxmexagainx agony auntI know it's very uncommon for a baby to survive that early, but there is obviously possible. so why don't they at least try? What if the doctors didn't try with that boy? He wouldn't have a chance to live.

The reason the dr.'s told you that is because a baby isn't viable outside the womb until 24 gestational age. I work on a mother baby unit and have never in my whole 12 years of being there seen a baby born before 24 weeks survive. I also work @ one of the best hospitals in the world...Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. I would consider that baby you read about as been a miracle baby and heaven sent and defiantly was destined to be here.
