Why would my period suddenly become irregular?

I'm on birth control and have been since last spring. (i wasn't getting my period.) what would cause my period, this month, to suddenly become irregular? i got it at the end of my last pack (as normal) and then 2 weeks later in the middle of this pack, which is totally wrong. what could be causing this all of the sudden?
