The key phase in your question is “…for the first time…” For lots of people (most?) the first time involves a lot of clumsily fumbling, and the specific issue you two had. But don’t worry a little practice, especially if you neither of you has things planned out but you are just going with the flow and letting things develop naturally, will usually fix this problem. Relax, be a little patient, be safe, and it will work out by itself. If it does not your boyfriend goes and talks to his doctor,(but don't tell him this until you have tried several times without improvement.)
