A female United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

Hi everyone this isn't really a love problem but you are always so helpful that maybe you can help me with this this:

Ok my older sister (she's 26 i'm 21). She tries to look like me, i just got a fringe cut in and now she's asking where i got it done so she can get it done too!!

She's always doing this last year i went dark, then she went dark..now i'm back as a blonde she has gone blonde..i'm soo pissed at her.

She actually tracks down my colourist and everthing, just so she can get exactly the same thing done as me. It's so annoying and i don't wanna look like her. I want to be my own individual, i suppose we have a few facial similarities, and when she does herself up to look exactly like me people always go "oh you guys are so alike".

I hate that so much, i mean she's my older sister, i should be looking up to her not the other way around? She literally just texted me there looking for the number of the new hair salon i went to recently, just so she can go there...what do i do?

This is soo irritating.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattrery.

She likes the way you look and wants to look like you. You should be flattered and help her achieve this.

Gena Bullock agony auntI never had a sis, so I can't understand the anguish this brings you. Sounds like she's jealous, maybe? I dunno, but I do know that you should be impressed that she wants and loves you enough to want to look like you. What's your mum think?

Try talking to your sister and maybe she will stop. And if she doesn't change try and get through to her head maybe she is hiding some thing and her appearence reminds her of it

brooke5426 agony auntHey,

I totally understand why that must be frustrating but it really is one of the biggest, most genuine compliments you could get. Not only does she think you look nice, she thinks you look so good she's trying to make herself look just like you. You could try helping her out by figuring out which hair colour / clothes look best on her and then telling her you think she looks really pretty like that and compliment her so she'll wanna look good in her own way, not in your way.

A female reader, pixeydust United States +, writes (25 April 2008):

pixeydust agony auntUsually isn't the younger sister that looks up to the older sister, but in your case it sounds like the roles are reveresed, which isn't so abnormal. I look up to my sister (even though she is younger than I am). I got married at a young age, had kids, dropped out of school. My sister, got through school, was in cheerleading, had good grades, was mom and dad's good girl, went to college, married a nice young gentleman in the military. She now has a 4 year old and just had twins this past July. She has done very well with her life. So this most likely is what it is.
