A male reader, anonymous, writes (18 January 2010):

The reasons are biological.

If you wanna know why we don't all change our minds now that we don't need virginity like we used to, that's just human nature. You might as well be asking women to stop liking bad boys with money.

Emjo agony auntBeacuse in modern day society the more girls a guy can sleep with the "better" man he is (apparently) whereas the more guys a girl sleeps with the bigger whore she is, again apparently.

It probably leads back to olden times and purity where men believe women must be virgins before they married them etc.

Sucks to be honest, how women are treated as such weak, pure, innocent creatures and how this efects their rights however I firmly believe that in order to level the playing field women shouldnt become more promiscuous, men should become more shivelrous!

BECAUSE WE'RE GUYS!A womans virginity is sacred, but when a boy or a man looses his then he takes his first steps towards beeing the man or (pig) he's gonna be for the rest of his life.It may not be right, but that's society

A female reader, GoGreen126 United States +, writes (17 January 2010):

Think back through generations and consider morals--parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and so forth. Sexuality in many cultures was very different than it is today. What about the times and places when a daughter being married off was like a form of payment? What about Mary and Joseph? If you're Christian or not, that story has a relevance. If a woman was "soiled" then she wasn't fit to be married. She was damaged goods.

A womans virginity is tangible, whereas a mans is not. Women throughout history have been the subordinate. At some points it was even like an issue of ownership.

Today, it's socially acceptable for teenage guys to sleep around, but not for girls. Tell me how that makes sense?! Anyway, there are many more things I could bring up, like hormones, but I think you get my point:it's always been this way.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (17 January 2010):

I know, I think its so silly how its being portrayed as two different things. Boys virginity and girls virginity is just as special (or insignificant) and should be treated the same. Its stereotypical, discriminating, and a bad habit to treat men and women differently.

A male reader, RAINORFIRE United States +, writes (17 January 2010):

RAINORFIRE agony auntThere are many reasons for that, but from a purely biological standpoint i would have to say because if a man where to have sex with a woman and get her pregnant and she was a virgin then he would have no doubt to wether the chils was his or not.

In the days before paternity test and farther back it would have been important for a man to kno he is taking care of his children and no one else is sleeping with his woman.

I once read about a type of bird that would replace the eggs of another bird with its own so that bird would unknowingly rear up its offspring.

The fact that importance is placed on something is often testimony to its importance. Allover ther world even in cultures seperated by thousands of miles female virginity seems to be valued.

Another thing is its often quite possible to tell on a female where as there is no physical way to know if a male is a virgin or not. In many societies male virginity is valued because traditionally the man is supposed to go out and conquest and have many females in somplaces a man is judged by how many wives he has or women he keeps. For a male to be a virgin it could be seen as a sign of weakness.

If you ever watch discovery channel you can see in the wild only the biggest strongest male will mate with the females, fortunately us humans in these mondern times value many diffrent skill sets. so if you dont have mucles atleast have money and loosing your virginity shouldnt be a problem
