She hasn't messaged me or anything saying why. I looked at her facebook and she hasn't added any of her son's other friends, just me. Any ideas why she would do this?

She's probably just adding everyone she knows.
Don't be afraid to ignore her invitation. I get random people adding me just because we have a mutual friend. I get the feeling they just like the idea of being able to say "I have 59493857 facebook friends."
Just send a message saying no offence but you are trying to keep your facebook to close friends and family only. Tell her if she wants to get in touch then she can do so through her son. Or you can just ignore it.
Older people who are just discovering the internet often don't understand the etiquette rules and treat it all as a bit of a joke.
Good Luck!! xx

Maybe she finds you a potential suitor for her son? If your that curious then message her and say something like.. "hey, your whatever his name is mum aren't you? I wasn't expecting and add from you lol :)" but like, keep it short and sweet, and include something subtle in there were she'd feel like she has to say why she added you? Hope that helps x
