Humans haven't changed much since the beginning of civilization in that regard and that was way before tv, airbrushing, and photoshop. Women in China bound their feet so they would look more like royalty. Men and women in Africa mutilate their earlobes and lengthen their necks with metal chokers because that is their standard of beauty. The media only exploits what we would do already and different companies profit from it.

Because we live in a world that tells women the single most important thing is to be attractive, above all other traits, and we are told that is the only way to be attractive. We all know the photos are photoshopped and not even the models look like that, but those images are shoved in our faces so much it's impossible not to be influenced by them.

Even the beauty standards on men are increasing these days.
