well for me it is about the feeling the words can so easly provoke, and heartbreak is a feeling most have had to endure. so i think its because we as humans want to feel

Staceily agony auntWell I like to listen to sad love songs when I'm driving so that could be similar to why you listen on the bus. I think I do it while driving alone because I won't be interrupted by anyone else, helps me think too, I'm very focused. It's hard to describe really. I like listening to sad songs because it makes me feel and feel deeply. I have a lot of emotions and listening to those songs evokes a lot of feeling from me. I prefer 'sad and depressing' songs to 'happy party' songs because I think they have more depth and meaning to me. I hope that makes sense.

People like to listen to that kind of music because it makes them feel less lonely and less weird because it shows them that others go through the same things. Some find strength in that, others actually like to feel extra sad and lonely though too, believe it or not a lot of people like to feel profoundly sad for one moment while listening to a song. I mean think of this way, why would you watch a horror movie? To be scared artificially right? To feel tension, anxiety, shock you know? I mean they're not nice emotions are they? No, but when you choose to consume a piece of media designed to give you those emotions it's controlled and you can get a thrill from that.

I mean I don't like feeling sad but I will throw on Schindlers list every once in and a while have a good cry for myself. Just so I can experience that emotion in a controlled way and maybe relieve any build up that may be occurring.

I hate love songs, all bullshit with the exact same lyrics every single song for idiots who have no brains. But I do understand why people like them, for pretty much the same reasons I like the music I like. To illicit an emotional response.

Okay so I don't hate love songs completely, some of my all time favourites are actually. Smokey Robinson - The Tracks of my tears, Heart - Alone, and Queens of the Stone Age - Go with the Flow are some of the best songs I've ever heard in my life. Can't stand Adele though, rather pierce my ear drums with a toothpick than listen to her warble on about some ex who "didn't understand" her.
