 It means that he forgot that Saturday was your anniversary and got up early and went fishing instead of snuggling in bed then going out to breakfast with the love of his life and now he knows he'd better do something quick fast and in a hurry or he's toast for the next week.

This means he likes you, and is most likely expressing his feelings obviously, not indirectly. He might be testing the water to see your reaction, so if you like him, go talk to him and see how he feels.
