Why do I get embarrassed talkiing about my boyfriend?

A female New Zealand age 41-50, anonymous writes:

Hi - to anyone who feels the same...

I love my boyfriend to bits - when we are alone or around people that I trust I can talk about him freely. However, whenever I am around workmates or certain people I know, I "freak out" incase they might ask me questions about him. I know this is because he has quite an unconventional outlook on life - he is an artist and works part time to support his art. I know this isn't anything to be embarrassed about but I find myself still really afraid of talking about him...I think it's quite weird considering we have a great relationship and I should be really proud to talk about him...can anyone give me insight as to WHY I feel like this?

Maybe your just afraid of all the stereotypes of artists. Like "what would an artist be without a girlfriend? Homeless" and etc I know, I was with a musician for years. They are not the richest in the world (unless they hit it big) but they are definately the most interesting! A lot of people dont understand artists outlook and think they are lazy, they dont understand living for a dream. He's not conventional but when someone asks you about him take pride in his uniquness, like you found a diamond in the rough. It's ok if they don't get it, because you do and that's all that really matters.

ilovebowsandcherries agony auntmaybe with the people at work you feel you need to have a more successful boyfriend i'm not saying he isn't but what i mean is maybe they're a bit sort of "upper" class so you speak.

maybe you feel they won't approve in some ways of what he does and think he's a bit weird or something maybe you think they'll think "oh he should be a solicitor" something a bit more money making.

Just a thought. you probably feel they won't approve but that shouldn't bother you hun, he does what he wants to do what his dream is.

Hope this helps :)
