A female reader, lonely wife0327 Canada +, writes (16 September 2010):

going to college and working are two different things. When we work, we see people all the time, chat about anything and are really into the work load. So you might say you have you dose of people during that time.. :) that's how I feel..

College is different, you go to class really concentrated about your studies, and there is not really a lot of time for chat or anything else. And getting home to a empty apartment can sometimes be overwhelming if you are a people person... I know I am, and on days off, I tend to get lonely too and feel depressed when there's nobody around.

But there are a few things you can try in order to have people around or have that companionship you need...

If you do need to feel people around you, you might want to try and go to the library to study. Even if the people in there won't talk or chat, you'd still have a presence.

You didn't mention a roommate, but that could also be a option.

Another option if you can, might be to get a pet... I know when I feel down, my cat comes next to me on the couch and gives me lots and lots of attention, and it does make me feel better...

If you are feeling more than lonely to a point that it's stopping you from studying and going on with your day to day stuff, you might want to see someone, even if it's just one session, you'd be surprised how much it could help. You college might even offer an on campus consultant.

I hope this helps a little bit...sometimes just knowing that someone understands also helps.

I'm wishing you a great day, and keep your head up... it will get better.. :)
