 Well a threesome is the most common fantasy among men. I think that is because all the porn we has seen during our young years (it is a shame but most our sexual education is given by some perverts who makes porn movies).
For a guy love and sex are different issues. A man can F*ck with a girl without even care to know her name, or to love deeply a girl knowing he will never be able to even touch her.
I think that make true that fantasy with the girlfriend and other girl will have a big cost, because it will break the respect and love that joins the couple. To make it true with some pleasing friends, It can be nice and something interesting for the friendship.
There is possible to have a nice triangle of love, but it is very unstable and 99% of times it ends with a lot of suffering and drama.
I thing you shouldn't do it. Love and some sex fantasies do not mix well, unless you like the same hard core issues...

 Guys are turned on by women. So logically, more women = better. However, guys who have found "the" girl, or at least a girl they think might bet the one don't usually want a threesome. Generally, the younger the guy the less ready they are to commit to a long term relationship such as marriage, so they are more likely to be interested in a threesome. Once guys mature, they realize they don't want anybody else kissing their partner... male or female.
Threesomes only work for casual sex partners who don't have jealousy issues or swingers.

 I can't tell you a percentage, but I know it frequently causes problems. Guys like threesomes because it's permission to sleep with someone else. Basically a threesome is asking permission to cheat. It doesn't mean he's unhappy with just you, but if you give in and you're not 100% on it, you'll be miserable. If it was just for excitement rather than to sleep with another girl, he'd be totally OK with it being another guy rather than another girl. If he isn't equally OK with you saying, OK I'll do a threesome if it's with a guy or if he gets jealous, I'd say no deal.
