He traveled around a lot and was never in one place for long. This relationship went on for 3 years. Then, I went through a transitional period, lots of upheaval at home and since this man was not physically there, our communication just sort of fell off. A few years ago, I attempted to contact him. He called me while I was out and left a message. I tried calling him back a couple of times, he never returned my calls. So, remembering the nature of our relationship in the past, I wrote him a letter. I told him the truth, which is, I am in love with him and have been since I was 17. I never heard from him. I realize I probably scared him because that info came from left field for him. But why did he never get back to me? And why can't I stop thinking about him? Finally, should I try again to contact him?

Because he had moved on. It's not worth contacting him again. He has moved on, and his lack or replies prove that. You now need to move on from him.
