 I would imagine it took so long because you simply went down the expected track along with all of your friends and aquaintances. You say you always wondered why your love life wasn't working and that wondering was your clue but based on your lifestyle and knowledge of yourself at the time you worked on different areas to "fix" your love life all the while vering off your true love path.
Please don't worry that it took you so long just embrace your new found freedom and enjoy it.
