A female United Kingdom age 30-35, *ish mash writes:

Hi again,

I know I have already put a question up about teachers and boyfriends! But can someone help me....

All my teachers (and I really do mean ALL my teachers) are telling me I'm anorexic! Ok I may not be helping this situation by calling myself fat, not eating and exercising atleast 5 times a day but I really don't think I am....

I do struggle to eat, I am always freezing cold, I look at callories, run regularly, do sit ups etc and get ill very easily (when I say easily I mean getting a cough or a cold atleast 5-6 times each month) so I'm regularly under some sort of antibiotics!

I mean I am not anorexic, I can't be! My teachers, friends and family tell me they are trying to help but I don't know what for! My school nurse, the male science teacher (I wrote about him in my last question), my female science teacher and my year head made me litrally strip off last Monday and they complained that they could see my bones but all I could see is fat!

Anyway I haven't been able to concentrate in class (this has been going on for 3-4 years now) please could someone help me, and please don't say eat because I'm NOT anorexic!

Thanks

Mish Mash

I think you know you're very anorexic.

That, or seeking attention.

I'll say it:

EAT.

If you eat nothing at all--or nearly nothing--for a long enough time, when you do start eating, even just a little more, you'll gain wait a whole lot easier. It'll make you fat THEN.

You aren't fat now. Start eating normal amounts of food and you'll be okay. Keep starving yourself, and when you do start eating more food--your metabolism will be horrible and you'll gain weight real quick.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (28 March 2010):

You can easily find the normal weight/height info on google.

I am interested to know why the OP does NOT think she is anorexic having listed all the problems she is dealing with at the moment. Perhaps this would enable us to understand a bit better. What is the basis for you thinking you are not anorexic? I cannot imagine what they might be given what you have posted, although if we are missing some crucial info then of course we cannot answer properly.

Incidentally, internet forums can only give opinions, however all those listed here do seem somewhat consistent. You really need to see a doctor. If you can demonstrate to them that there is nothing wrong, then you have nothing to worry about. Seeing a medical professional is the only way ahead though really I think.

Not My Name agony auntSince when do teachers make students strip? Sorry if I am wrong, but I don't believe you because of that line. Just incase tho, also look up 'body dysmorphia'. Either way, attention seeking is definately an issue you could seek some psychological help to address.

A female reader, celtic_tiger United Kingdom +, writes (28 March 2010):

celtic_tiger agony auntThis is a question you need to be asking a qualified medical Doctor, not people on the internet.

The fact that you deny so strongly that "please don't say eat because I'm NOT anorexic!" makes me very concerned for you, as this is classic denial symptoms. Its like an alcholic who refuses to admit they have a problem. Please go and see a professional about this, its best to be safe than sorry. Do you want to be sorry?

Your teachers are obviously VERY concerned about you, which makes me worry for you as well. I am a teacher, and we would have to be seriously worried to do what they did.

We cannot see you, or weigh you, so we cannot give you a definative answer. You need to go and see a medical professional, Doctor, GP, Practice Nurse, School Nurse (altho you have totally ignored her advice), someone with the appropriate medical knowledge. They will do a check on your BMI - body mass index.

However, for reference this is a general discussion on low weight issues.

You say:

1. calling myself fat,

2. not eating

3. exercising atleast 5 times a day

4. always freezing cold,

5. I look at calories

6. run regularly, do sit ups etc

7. get ill very easily

8. Not had a period for 2 months.

A normal adult woman should be consuming 2000 calories a day, if she sits on her bottom and does nothing. This is what your body needs to just be, to just tick over and do all the things bodies do, such as breath, see, hear and think. So, with all that exercise, you should be eating 3000 + at least I would think. Personally, I try and stick to this 2000 limit. Do you?

All these symptoms, which you yourself have listed point to some kind of medical problem.

You should eat. Regardless of if you think you are "fat" or "skinny" you need to eat. Bodies need fuel to make them work. Everything you do needs food to power it. Eyes, heart, lungs, legs, urine production, everything. If you dont eat, your body shuts down. Which leads to symptoms 4, 7 & 8.

4. You get cold, because your body does not have enough fuel (food) to keep it warm. This means your body slows down, your internal organs shut down (just like with hypothermia) and eventually go into failure. Your blood is not circulating quickly enough to keep it warm, so your body diverts the nice warm blood to your most important organs, heart, lungs, kidneys, liver etc,in order to keep you running.

7. You get ill very easily, because your immune system is shutting down (lack of fuel/food again), it cannot fight any bugs or colds which it comes up against. The longer you carry on like this, you could end up with all sorts of irreversible medical conditions. Your body just cannot fight it, and you could end up in hospital. Do you want that? Other complications of this include increased pressure on the heart, which can lead to complications later on in life. Just something to think about.

8. You have not had a period for 2 months. This is a REALLY SERIOUS sign. This means your body no longer has enough strength, natural fat resources (which we ALL NEED) or energy to either concieve or carry a child. Your body is no longer functioning properly.

Also, another side effect of no periods due to low weight, is osteoperosis - or brittle bone disease, which is softening of the bones which increases risk of fracture.

Hips and vertebrae are especially prone to breaks and the softened bone is hard to fix, sometimes resulting in permanent disability or disfigurement

You are exercising 5 times a DAY?? Even Olympic Athletes probably do not do that. It is FAR too excessive. 3 times a week at the most.

Please look at the link:

http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Anorexia-nervosa/Pages/Symptoms.aspx

Symptoms of Anorexia:

•eating as little as possible (under-eating),

•doing too much exercise (over-exercising).

•fine downy hair (lanugo) may grow on their body,

•hair on their face may increase, or

•their pubic hair may become sparse and thin.

•feel very tired (fatigue) - as their sleep patterns may have changed,

•feel cold or have a low body temperature (hypothermia),

•In women and older girls, anorexia can stop their periods. This is sometimes called absent periods (amenorrhoea). Anorexia can also lead to infertility.

I cannot urge you enough to go to the Doctor and get yourself checked over. People DIE from anorexia, because the dont believe they are ill and they refuse to get help. The cannot see what everyone else sees. They think they are fat. Please please please dont be one of those girls.

Take this as a test. If you go the Doctor, and they say "hey, you are ok" then thats great, and then you can go and tell everyone, told you so, I am not anorexic. BUT, what if you are underweight? What if you are wrong? Just in case, go and get checked over what have you got to lose?

Think about it.

Miamine agony auntIf you can't eat one big meal, then break it down, try to eat 6 small meals... Nuts are high in protein, so are eggs and they are easy to swallow. Don't forget your fruit and carbohydrates, mash potatoes are easy to swallow.

Ask to see a counsellor or a dietician who can tell you how to diet safely.

Stop exercise, your not eating enough to produce energy to carry on working out safely..

Meet your parents, school and medical team half way, show them you are willing to change your ways. Listen to them and do what they say... Either you try to help them get you well.. or they will end up forcing you.

Already you are very unwell, you periods have stopped and your always cold, your always getting sick and you live on antibiotics.

Miamine agony auntYes marieclaire, my comment should have been posed to the original poster.. :)

Mish Mash, how can we know what is normal for your age.. it depends on your height and your weight.. surely you know what that is, you calorie count and you've been seen by the nurse..

Anorexic's are very manipulative, you know what is healthy, you know your weight, you calorie count remember....

Anorexics are usually very intelligent people... no one here is going to support you... YOU SHOW ALL THE SIGNS OF ANOREXIA...

Already your periods have stopped, next your bones will start to become brittle, you will continue to get colds and infections, you won't heal if you get cut... don't fall over, you don't have enough vitamins to heal properly...

Your getting to the point when the damage is irreversible... if you can't eat, then at least drink milk, stop exercising and drink a food replacement high in vitamin's (nutrament) or take some vitamin pills....

At the moment you are damaging your long term fertility and your bone density... these might not be able to be reversed...

What a load of nonsense. As if any teacher or responsible adult can order anyone to strip off is just not on these days. Either you are an attention seeker or just trying to wind people up? Stop it now because some on here have real problems.

If true (which I very much doubt) then you have some serious issues and should see a shrink urgently.

A male reader, Kenj United Kingdom +, writes (27 March 2010):

Kenj agony auntThe reality of this is you do have an eating disorder if you want to admit it to yourself or not.

My girlfriend has had Anorexia Nervosa for 16 years so I really do know somewhat what I am talking about here.

Eating disorders are very serious they can KILL and they wont go away on their own.

As you well know it’s not as simple as just eating food, you will be thinking about food for most of the day and night. You probably know how many calories are in every food type.

You are cold because your body fat is low, you can’t concentrate because you are malnourished and antibiotics will stop working soon for you.

Ignore your teachers they have no right to be telling you what to do with your life, but please listen to your family, they are not nagging you even if it appears like they are right now.

Recovery is possible, but only once you accept it. If you continue loosing weight then you will end up in hospital on a section 3 and you wont have a choice in the matter any more.

If you need to chat, feel free to send me a private message via this website.

PLEASE GET HELP before it is too late for you.

A female reader, Miamine United Kingdom +, writes (27 March 2010):

Miamine agony auntMarieclaire, part of the problem with anorexics is they want to stay in control, they also like the attention they are getting. She will not admit that she is sick, she will continue to overexercise and starve herself.. but she will loose control, the medical team, her family and school are watching her very carefully.

She is not seeing reality, they will take away her power to make her own decisions. She will be watched and her ability to choose when and what to eat will be taken away.. She can lie to herself as much as she likes, she is just making things harder. They are monitoring her, probably weekly or monthly her weight is taken, it's a case of months (or weeks) before she is admitted to a specialist hospital..

A female reader, anonymous, writes (27 March 2010):

Well, if you are not anorexic then you clearly have some other serious psychological issues which are compelling you to lose weight and think you are fat. I imagine you are not fat, from what you are saying. Your post belies someone who is completely in denial of what is really going on, and as the others have said, you need psychological help, either voluntarily if you realise what is happening, or at some point then through some kind of section which will see you admitted to hospital. Please try and read back what you are actually saying. Your behaviour is irrational. Many people around you can see it. You post clearly shows it, however, for some reason you cannot understand the message that this gives to others. This to me suggests that you need psychiatric care. Please try and look objectively at what you are saying and doing, and then try googling symptoms of anorexia. Stop denying what is happening here. And don't tell us to say you aren't anorexic because your post shows that you really have some serious problems. This can lead to death, please get help.

Nb. you shouldn't be on antibiotics for coughs and colds, they don't help. What will help is a nutritious diet. Your body is probably falling apart because you aren't giving it enough fuel.

Miamine agony auntI also noticed you haven't mentioned your height or your weight... you are probably well below a normal BMI, and have the body of a child.

http://www.rcpsych.ac.uk/default.aspx?page=1428

You will either eat or you will be sectioned and forced into hospital. There is no choice, if you do not eat, if you continue to loose weight you will die.

A female reader, Miamine United Kingdom +, writes (27 March 2010):

Miamine agony auntAll the things you say are the symptoms of anorexia. A trained medical person (school nurse) has diagnoised you as anorexic. Soon your periods will stop, then you won't heal if you cut yourself. Before you drop into a coma, the medical team and your parents will have you committed to a hospital and you will be force fed.

You can say whatever you like, if you continue to loose weight, you will be forced into hospital and then you'll have food pumped into through a feeding tube. They will not allow you to die.

Anorexia is a deadly disease, your unable to see how skinny you are. Anorexia is a killer.
