Don't worry about it, you have more bloodflow down there during your period so you're easier to arouse. Personally I find that I have an easier time getting turned on and a much harder time orgasming and that mine aren't all that great during, but I'm sure it's normal and just varies from woman to woman.

All I know is that my ex tended to be hornier just before and during her periods. I don't know that she necessarily would have any stronger orgasms, but I wouldn't doubt it's normal.

I don't think I've ever heard that comment before. (I don't doubt you in the least, it's just not an experience I recall ever being mentioned.)
Many women report that a good orgasm, especially just a few hours before their period starts, reduces or eliminates menstrual cramps. Perhaps, like "satindesire" suggested, this is related to your experience.
