writes: Dear Cupid ,okay I went to the source of finding out about if my mom has insurance on herself come to find out yes she does but the company claim that the policy premium was never paid for to start coverage back in 1999.So the woman said she would send me paper work to start another one but my mom said the woman is lying and she has paper work to show this policy is active.My mom is 76 years old and she suffers from dementia on and off but I don 't think she would make this up What can I do to find out about this existing insurance policy? reader, anonymous, writes (7 August 2013): The insurance company isn't lying. This isn't about lying anyway. It's about documentation to support your claims.
Your mother is mistaken and you'd better listen to the insurance company, and follow-their instructions to the letter. If she has dementia, how can your mother argue with what can most-likely be proven with documentation from the insurance company?
Even if your mother is correct, her words mean nothing to the insurance company.
There is little you can do legally without your own documentation to back it up.

While it is possible that the insurance company is mistaken, it is highly unlikely.
Like eyeswideopen says, unless your mum can provide proof that those premiums were paid, there is no coverage. I'm a bit surprised that the insurance company would still have records going back to 1999 for a policy that was never in force.
Check your mum's bank account first.

DOES your mom have paperwork that proves she has been paying the premiums regularly? Bank statements? If not then you have no choice but to believe the insurance company.
