I would confide with her something that has not been disclosed to anybody else.
It doesn't have to be the truth, it just has to be something that nobody else would say. Something like you secretly having the hots for somebody like a teacher.
It maybe about a nasty ficticious arguement you have had with a parent or a friend at distance that could not be easily double checked with. You could even tell the same story to three or four suspects giving a slightly differant detail to each one. When the info comes back all you have to do is listen carefully to the variation to be able to trace it back to the original perpetrator - simple.
Similar to what 'O Connor' below has said but if you do your homework then you should be able to syphon out if the new girl is the problem or if your friends are trying to make her look bad instead.

 well this girl is new on the scene and you have just met her right? and your other friends - im presuming - have been with you alot longer? if it were me, i would be a bit suspicious - very coincidental that the rumours only start when you start being friends with her? have you asked her about these rumours, has she denied spreading them? to be honest, i would listen to your friends - see how they know that it is she who is spreading these rumours - with more info you'll probably be able to piece it together and trace them back. rumours have to start somewhere and with a bit of research, they can always be traced back to the culprit. hope this helps hun, email me if you want - and i would be a bit suspicious about this girl! xxx
