Who to share a flat with?

Hi everyone,

I'm at university and am having to decide where I'm gonna live next year. Problem is I have 2 offers on the table - one of them is with one other girl who is quiet and already owns a flat in a reasonably nice area of town, but its a bit further out than I would like (although there are good bus links). OR there's a group of 4 (mixed sex) who've asked me and are still looking for a flat. These guys are more likely to want to go out more and are a bit louder. We've looked at some places but again, they are still reasonably far out from where I need to be. I don't know how happy my parents are about me sharing with 4 others, but I do get on well with them all. My dad in particular is being very resistant to the entire proposition. Who, just out of interest, would you live with and why? Just in a bit of a pickle at the minute with it all :/

Thank you to everyone who answered my question, in the end I decided to live with the quieter girl as I just had a bad gut instinct about the other flat for some reason... Thanks again, your help is much appreciated :) x

The Realist agony auntI would live with the quiet girl just because you can always go out for parties and such but you wouldn't want them to be at your place all the time.

I think that it would be nice to share with the one girl. Less to clean up and much easier to distibute the tasks of the place. I have just always thought that if I was to have roommates that I would want as few as possible.

hiya I'm at uni too, and I'm also looking for a place to live.

i struggled to decide who to move in with as well. its not an easy thing to do. My dad was against me moving in with blokes, I changed his mind on this by getting him to talk to them on FB. so this is what i would suggest if you are struggling with your choice because of him...

If your struggling because your worried you won't find a place to live then write out 10 reasons for moving in with anyone i.e. cleanliness, party lifestyle, being able to do work, money etc, then score both the group and the girl out of 3 the one with the highest score is where you'll want to be.

If you still cant decide and you are finding it harder to find a 5 bed place then move in with the quiet girl, no-one is stopping you from staying at your other friends houses overnight... just ask someone to keep a sleeping bag and a roll mat for when you want to stay over. you never know with your influence she may become more outgoing and be happier to go out on the town with you :)

I hope that helps?

A female reader, Xx-Scorpio-xX United Kingdom +, writes (15 February 2011):

Xx-Scorpio-xX agony auntI'm not at uni yet but i will be next year. I think i would probably choose the girl as i personally don't think i would like to share a house with 4 other people (i like my own space too much). But it depends on your personality and who you feel closer to. If you barely know the girl but are good friends with the 4 then i would choose them over the girl and vice versa. It will be cheaper to live with more people which can be a good thing. If you are a studious/shy type of person then it may be better to go with the girl but if you like partying then choose the 4. If you like things to be clean and tidy then choose the girl as i would imagine living with 4 others (including boys) would be messy and sometimes chaotic!

I hope this helps :)
