reader, anonymous, writes (12 November 2005): There isn't a 'has to' here, it's a grey area and goes differently depending on each relationship. don't get hung up on supposed protocol, it's really not an issue on this one unless your aristocracy perhaps! : ) You're clearly thinking about it - is this because you want to put the relationship on a firmer footing and you think this is the answer? Is there a commitment problem between you? If yes to either then think very carefully.Otherwise, me personally, as it is guys who mostly hesitate to commit I would wait for him to make the first move, but if your parents live closer or visit more then it might be more practical for you to go first. I would mention it to your boyfriend casually first and see how he reacts.Good luck!
