Which pen to get my girlfriend for Christmas?

A male United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

For christmas I am going to get my girlfriend of a month an engraved pen as she loves stationary - would it be meaningful enough just to put her name on it or should i add a message too and if so what should that message be considering we've only been together a month?

As an addition: do you think either of these is suitable for a gift? which do you prefer? :

Hey everyone,

Sorry for the late update but thought I'd let you know that I splashed out and got the third pen... I think she like it!! she seemed to anyway although it was a bit scratched when i got it which i was a bit miffed about but she wouldn't let me change it as she said she wanted to keep the exact one I gave her christmas day... I guess that's a good thing. Just a thank you to everyone that helped :) many thanks! hope you are all well and having a good new year !

I think her name is enough on the pen. where you have only gone out for a month, I think it would be better just her name. I like all of the pens but number 3 is my favorite.

I think it is cool that you are doning this for her my boyfriend would never do anything like that.

Buy her a Biro then work your way up to a Gold fountain pen. You have only known her for a month and an engraving vowing your eternal love is more likely to send her running to the hills for fear you're a Bunny boiler than anything else.

I like very slim and elegant things, the third pen you mentioned is very sexy and would make me feel like a princess.. A very thoughtful guy you are, that's a lovely gift to get for anyone.

Third ones my favourite, but I like number one as well. Number two is just too clunky for me, it looks like it's made for a businessman....

Great ideas for presents... She's a lucky girl.

Hey is the swarovski £60 pounds... Much too expensive, go with the cheaper one. Too much expense spent, might make her think your trying to show off. I like silver, to me it looks classy and I would personally prefer a sweet romantic message rather than a jokey one.. not too heavy, just sweet. But you know the lady best.

But the Swarovski is very sexy.... mmmmmm

A female reader, deejuliet United States +, writes (16 December 2008):

deejuliet agony auntI personally like the first pen you presented. It is beautiful and even the case is pretty! It also seems an appropriate amount of money to spend. You have only been dating a month, so the swarovski one at 60 pounds seems to me a bit extravagent. You want her to like you for you, not because you buy her expensive things and I think it is too early for something so expensive. Also, pens are easily lost and you dont want her agonizing with guilt if she happens to lose this pen. So, in my opinion the first pen would be a lovely gift and just her name should be sufficient or "to Sue love Henry" would work as well. "I love you with all my heart" and some of the other things people are suggesting are too much!! It will seem that you are coming on too strong and it will put her off. Next year if you are still dating you could add a strong sentiment like "You mean the world to me" but not yet.

Use an in-joke or whatever on her pen or put something that she's always saying. When I was just friends with my boyfriend I labelled him as '**** - ever the optimist' due to his positive outlook on life. I got it printed on some drum sticks for his xmas present.

As for the pen, only you will know which she would like best - could you get one in her favourite colour? =]

I hope I'm not being too overly concerned with semantics, but there's a world of difference between stationary and stationery!

That's a lot of money to be forking out on a pen, but I'm sure she'd love it - especially if she knew what it cost. I'd say to keep it simple and just have her initials engraved on it. Gothic script, of course!

You must like her a lot, that's all I can say.

I'm back with another answer....that second pen is beautiful. I like the fact that it's solid silver- that is quite some gift to receive- I would be thrilled. Although personally I would go for something without the swarovski as I think the pen in itself is a beautiful item. This one is very stylish and feminine- good find. As far as engraving goes, I would suggest either just her first name, or perhaps as the other aunt suggested, "to my darling....". I would also second the answer that you might consider a fountain pen over a ball point, simply because they are more traditional and usually more attractive to look at and use. however, they are not always as practical so in that sense a ballpoint may be better- pick what she is likely to use more so it won't sit in a drawer.

Hey, thanks for the advice. One more thing if you don't mind - i've found this one too- it's quite a bit more expensive but do you think it's nicer? :

http://www.penheaven.co.uk/121_Laban-Swarovski-Crystal-Slimline-Ballpoint-Pen.html

Also - it only allows a small amount of engraving so do i just put her first and second name or to (her first name) from (my first name). Sorry to keep bugging :P i wanna get this right :)

many thanks!

I think that having her name engraved is enough; also there is not a lot of space on a pen and you don't want the text to be squashed up as it will look messy. I would advise that you don't just take it to a high st engraver, but to a jeweller- specifically a hand engraver. The difference between hand and machine engraving is amazing, and although the former is a lot more expensive, the difference is worth it in my opinion. I bought my boyf a pocket watch and had the back engraved like that. He was really pleased and I'm sure your girlf will be too. Of the two links you give, I think the second is the best by far, although they do both look a little chunky, and as a girl I prefer something small and more delicate to write with as my hands are quite small. Have you looked at Waterman pens? They are often quite nice and slim and lightweight. But eitherway, it's a really thoughtful gift. Good work!

A female reader, kitty-katy United Kingdom +, writes (16 December 2008):

That's so sweet! I'm a stationary lover my self, and both those pens are nice, but have you though about maybe a more traditional ink pen rather than a ballpoint? That could make it even more special!

I think it would be great to get her name engraved on it, but maybe saysomething like "My darling ..." (with the dots being her name) so that it's not too soppy, but still shows you care about her?

I hope I helped!
