It only just occured to me that most people would probably want to see a female doctor about this, but when they asked me if I would rather on the phone, I realised I didnt' really care. I know this seems a really silly, but I was just interested to see how other people felt about this. I kind of felt obliged to see a female doctor, even though for some reason I'd rather a male doctor. Weird or what? Thanks in advance,Effy.

My fiance is training in obs and gynae (they go together, can't do one without the other for a long time), and he doesn't do it because, as pink topaz says me must be "a perv and wants to lok at vaginas all day." Do you honestly think that is someone's basis for their job choice? His patients are not sexy, attractive women with whom he partakes in some sexual encounter. Most of them are old, or overweight, or whatever. He is there to help solve problems and make people's lives better. The fact that they are solving a problem related to sex organs really means nothing. Presumably you would think the same of a woman who wanted to be a urologist? I am a secretary to a female urologist, perhaps I should look at her in a new light now, or also the male urologists who also deal with women, I mean, they must all be perverts because their only motivation to go into that line of work was simply to look at sex organs of the opposite gender all day. Or the male breast surgeon who did my mother in law's mastectomy when she had breast cancer, because of course he wants to look at breasts all day doesn't he. Geez. Some people's narrow mindedness/stupidity leaves me amazed. People are there trying to do a good job and yet these sort of preconceptions exist. It makes me sad.

It seems like I'm definitely not the only one, so thanks so much!
You all made good points, I guess it's a very individual choice.

I prefer male doctors and female nurses. Not for any particular reason though. I did once get good care from a female doctor though. But then she was often absent and had kids to attend to and stuff. In terms of competency they are probably equals, but in the end I have had better experiences with male gyne's and female midwifes. The one male nurse who has ever attended to me was blundering and a female took over from him.
There is nothing perverted about a male gynae. Saying so is implying that something sexual happens with a male doctor but its not that way at all. In fact, unless you've actually had a lawsuit/experience proving abuse, such a claim actually says more about the patient's twisted thinking than about the doctor who is just honestly doing his job. Many of them have wives and children attended to by male doctors too. If you are visiting one for a pregnancy, most times there is a nurse present or your partner. In the delivery room/theatre there are often two or more other people present. Its such a ridiculous assumption I have to put in more analogies; is a Paediatrician automatically a pedophile? What about a female pediatrician? What about female gyne's are they lesbians because they poke about our privates unlike ordinary women? I have had 4 male gyne's and one female and they have all been great. They probably would rather not have a patient with their mind on sexual perversion. End of the day, its a personal choice. Some people are more comfortable with a female and that's ok too. But accusing doctors of perversion because they are gyne's is a little off course.

It is their medical knowledge that you want, and that is all they care about too. I think people often get embarrassed but goodness knows why, docs aren't they to judge or have much of an opinion. What's more they don't really care after they have seen these situations hundreds of times.

I've always had male doctors for all my body parts. Not on purpose just worked out that way. I guess it doesn't matter to me very much.

I personally feel more comfortable with a man because its more natural for me to be naked and intimate with a male (am straight hehe)! You should not feel obliged to pick a woman gynea... try both and see how you get on. xx

In the UK if theres any need for intimate examinations theres always a chaperone present if its a male doctor....or there should be. For that reason its sometimes easier if its a female doctor, as she wont have to go searching the clinic or surgery looking for a member of the nursing team to act as chaperone. Other than that i see no difference. A doc is a doc.

I don't know why, I just feel more comfortable with a male. I think it all chalks up to I just tend to have better rapport with guys. There's nothing wrong with a female. You should do whatever makes YOU feel comfortable. :-)

I prefer female because for some reason in my mind I feel like a male wanting to be a gynecologist is a perv and wants to look at vaginas all day. I'm sure it's not completely the case, but I won't go to a male if I don't have to. My best friend on the other hand prefers male because she doesn't feel right having a female look at her "area." To each their own.
