Hi just wondering which contraception is best and will least affect my body? I’m turning 16 next month and going to start having sex with my boyfriend when I am legal. He said he will use condoms every time but I just want to be extra safe and go on something as well. Do any girls on here have any advice? I’m thinking of the implant but I’ve looked it up and it says it can really affect your hormones, so can the pill. I’m also wondering if the coil is any good?

Thanks.

QueenCupcake agony auntHi, you could always ask to speak to a female GP if you feel uncomfortable.

Dionee' agony auntMy dear, none of us can give you medical advice as far as how your body will react to various methods of contraception. You have GOT TO speak to your doctor about this.

As far as getting freaky goes, I agree that you should wait but I do give you props for wanting to be safe when you do decide to sleep with your boyfriend. Take your time. Take it easy. Be safe.

Youcannotbeserious agony auntAs we don't know your medical history, nor are any of us qualified to give medical advice, this is not something with which we can help.

Speak to your doctor who will have your medical notes on file. Discuss what would be best for you.

Although I too would caution about rushing into having sex just because you are legally allowed to, I doubt anything I write will slow you down in your gallop towards having sex. I do commend you for thinking through the birth control issue so thoroughly. All I will advise is be careful, always remember to take your pill (if that is what you end up taking), have regular check-ups with your doctor as required and, lastly, have fun. Don't feel you HAVE to do anything with which you are not comfortable. Take things at your own pace. Remember, it is YOUR body, YOUR choice. Take care.

Hi thanks for your help. I am going to see my GP next week to talk about it but because he’s a man I just wanted some advice from women really just because they would know from experience. I did ask my Mum and she said the implant would be the best thing because you don’t have to worry about remembering to take the pill everyday and risk forgetting, but she said it really messed with her hormones and made her put on weight as well, that’s the only negatives. I think I will just take my GP’s advice when I see him. To Honeypie, I do feel ready to have sex as does my boyfriend and if we’re being sensible about contraception and we feel comfortable then I think that is all that matters.

A female reader, QueenCupcake United Kingdom +, writes (5 February 2022):

QueenCupcake agony auntThe best method for you is dependent upon a few factors such as your BMI, and your medical history. Therefore, we can’t really advise you on this; you should ring your GP or sexual health clinic near to you. They’ll be able to ask you questions and you’ll be able to figure out the best method for you. Each method of contraception has its own pros and cons.

Hi, we can't really advise you properly as we're not medically trained. We might suggest one thing but your doctor might tell you later that it's not a suitable option for you. You'll need to see your GP or go to your local Contraceptive and Sexual Health clinic (CASH) You can find your local one online by googling CASH + your local area.

Although I agree with HoneyPie, (you're very young to be having sex) I think you should make that appointment soon. You don't have to wait until you're 16. Then you can spend a few months thinking about your options before anything is prescribed for you.

But I will add this - all hormonal methods of contraception (oral pill, injection, implant or coil) can have side-effects. Condoms are really the only contraceptives that don't.

Stay safe

Condom is the best and has no adverse effect on your health, also protects you from sexually transmittable diseases. It is almost 100% effective if properly used.

Honeypie agony auntTALK to your doctor.

We can't prescribe your birth control.

There are low estrogen pills, I have only heard negative things about implants but they might work for you. However, BEFORE you get birth control it is a GOOD thing to get an exam from a Gynochologist and TALK to a doc/GYN to figure out which birth control would work best for you.

I think it's smart that you want to be on birth control AND have your BF use a condom.

Though I want to say this, 16 is pretty young to start having sex, what is the hurry? Whether you like it or not you are still a child.
