Ah, the old popup excuse. There are such thing as popup blockers you know, so either he is lying or stupid.
Second, you might be amazed at how much of the internet doesn't have porn on it, nor porn popups. The old myth that most of the internet is porn? Wrong. Most of it is netflix and facebook these days. Porn hasn't gone away, just that people have found other uses for the internet.
Some seemingly porn addictions is more of a hording instinct. The pokemon: Gotta catch them all.
As you know, men can only cum so much. A porn sex addiction in men could never take over their lives because their simply ain't enough orgasms in the day. So why still browse for porn?
Compare it with compulsive shoppers and it starts to look very similar. People who download a hundred porn movies are not that different from those who buy a hundred shoes. You can't have any possible use for them but it is the collecting, the finding that matters.
Am I wrong in thinking he has no other hobbies? He comes home and sits down in front of the PC and that is it?
The trick to spot the difference between hording and sex addiction is ... The SEX! Does he watch porn OR does he jerk off a lot?
Part of the shopping/collecting addiction is that it doesn't have to be a full blown addiction, it is just that people like to feel they accomplished something. Finding that pair of shoes 50% off, that is something. Finding a site you think might be hard to find and findin it, is an accomplishment, dopamin fires and you get your reward.
Games work this way, do a simple task, get a reward, you feel happy. Ideally, other things in your life should be doing the same but it is very easy for daily life to become a never ending chore with no rewards and then people fill it with anything they can.
Does the porn he search for varies, a pure sex addict would soon find a few sites/niches he likes and stick to that.

Sounds like he's got either sex addiction, porn addiction, or a very high sex drive... there's therapy, pills, and long love making sessions that can fix that...
