 As a Soldier, I have deployed (went to war) 3 times. Each time I was gone for one year.
If you had strong relationship before the seperation, it will remain strong. The old addage, "Absence will make the heart grow fonder" isn't really true if you don't have a strong foundation to begin with.
Skype is an inexpensive way to stay in touch. And letters (the ones you write with a pen and mail with a stamp) are always a bonus.
