You should always use condoms as well. The pill will protect against pregnancy but does not against STD's. If you use a condom as well, you are covered completely for both.

You don’t mention the type of pill. If you are on the combined pill, then it is very effective as long as you stick to the rules. 98 – 99% effective is the commonly quoted figure. That’s about as near to completely certain as you could get. If you are still worried, then use condoms as well. I took the pill for 16 years, and had absolutely no pregnancy scares or side effects. I think the mini pill is less effective, but have never taken it, so don’t feel able to comment on it.
