I was living in a large city, but I ended up getting laid off my job and moved back home, to my much smaller city. The city isn't so tiny, but it isn't big either. I pretty much still run into people that I went to high school with ocassionally, both friends and aquaintances.Well there's a guy I used to be involved with, one of those "hot and cold guys." He was trying to get back with me when when he got word I was coming back. However, he's still still a hopeless idiot and I don't want anything to do with him and I basically just told him that today.Anyhow, I'll get to my question now. I'm thinking about trying to get a job at a restaurant, being that I have no experience in food service I'll have to start off as a hostess probably and then work my way to server since I want to get back to school and make good money off tips. Also I'm thinking it will help me so I can move back to the city I was at and make really good money as a server. But what's holding me back is that I'll run into people I know or even that guy I was seeing from my past. For some reason here, I tend to care too much what others will think or even feel like I'm a "loser" or something for working at a place like that, since I am 25 and used to work in a professional field. I get serious anxiety at the thought of working at a restaurant and running into any of those people or even my past fling. I'm really hoping to hear that this isn't a big deal and I'm worrying over nothing. I wanted to know what you guys think. Thanks!

Well you are doing it for a good reason so you shouldnt be worried about what other people may think. You are doing it to improve yourself and to help build a better future so you shouldnt be embarrassed! Yes it may mean a few people see you in the restaurant and wonder what you are doing in there but you know that you are doing it because you want to go back to school and need to get some money for that.
And think of it this way; it is much better to be working in a restaurant than being unemployed and moping around at home! People would think less of you if you didnt get back out there and find a job so even if it is just a restaurant job it is better than doing nothing. With the recession at the moment plenty of highly skilled people who used to have great careers are finding themselves out of work, so to go and work in a restaurant after being in a professional field is pretty normal at the moment!
Good for you for making plans for your future and working towards your goals, you sound very driven and it is good to hear that people want to work instead of accepting their fate and being unemployed for ages!
Good luck with getting a job and going back to school!
