 Try this out... it might help to break the ice on a discussion like this. I think I picked this up from Men's Health online articles (if you want to try and search for it).
The summary is that you need a round-about way of opening the lines of communication along the sexuality. The article suggested renting a sexually charged movie (something like 9 1/2 Weeks -- something racy). Watch it together, then when the movies over (coyly) start a conversation about the movie. Get a comfortable conversation regarding the kinkier side of sexy and use that to figure out what might turn him on... do you get the idea?

 Most of the time (and some will disagree), it is the exotic fantasy that excites them.
