writes: Hi I live in the uk .. my stepson lives with me and his dad .. my son has just turned 13yrs old .. I just struggle to know what time bed time should be on a school night at the moment he goes at 9pm as he is a early riser say 530am/6am. And does a paper round at 7am then school at 830am .. sports clubs and extra tuition after school 3 days aweek.. so he has a busy day .. he wants to stay up later of course but it's to watch tv . And over weekends he can watch tv for 10 hours aday does he need another hour . We do go out but now its school holidays he gets 2 or 3 days awk just sitting in .. does he need another hour on those days ?? Reply to this Question Share |

reader, anonymous, writes (1 August 2022): Ok more info .. we have many days out cinema..day trips etc he goes with dad to cinema and go karting .. and he has friends and goes to football academy 1-2 times aweek but on days we dont go out or his mates are busy .. he can spend 10 hrs watching tv .. his mum died many years ago .. so it just me and dad and before I was involved , he was left to his own devices in his room .. and now hes a teenager it's getting worse .. am I worrying to much .

I think 9 PM is fine. 10 PM for the weekends.
But if this is your stepson, TALK to your husband. He and his ex need to be the ones to make those rules.
Watching TV for 10 hours a day I'd say is WAY too much. Sounds like he needs some chores or perhaps his dad needs to take some one-on-one time with him?

reader, anonymous, writes (1 August 2022): Teenagers from 13 to 18 should get regularly 8 to 10 hours sleep per night. Your son averages about 9 , I think he can manage to stay up one more hour,no big deal. Let him watch TV, TV is not an evil demon ( at least as compare to.many things he could be into as a teenager ), it's not all rubbidh, there are plenty of programmes that are intelligent, entertaining and informative. IF any, I'd try to restructure the way he spends his time in school-free days.10 hours of TV a day ? Why ? Hasn't he got friends to hang out with a d play with ? Don't you ever take him to museums or movies or parks or swimming pools? 20 hours of TV every weekend sounds like the life of a loner, I think that social isolation is more dangerous for a kid than watching TV....
