 A "safe bet" is someone whom the guy can bank upon, while he goes gallivanting. I don't think a decent guy would ever call a girl a "safe bet". A safe bet means someone who is good enough to take home to mom, from a good family background, fairly well educated, pleasant looking...basically the package. Might not be a very interesting package, but a safe package.
