LazyGuy agony auntSex is about an orgasm.

Making love is about being intimate with someone.

You can have sex with your girlfriend, but you cannot make love with a hooker.

A female reader, SugarCookie United States +, writes (12 June 2008):

I think that tremor put it well, but to put it in different words: Sex is when you have to have that person now because your body cant wait. Making love is when you want to use you body to show someone that you love them. The difference in feeling during the act is that with sex you focus more on the feeling of the actual act of sex while with making love you focus more on the other persons reaction and the feeling of feeling like you cant get any closer to that other person since they are inside of you or you are inside of them. You can have both with the same person and in truth you can do both during the same session. It can start as making love but as the feelings growth the pleasure might and that will just make you want that ultimate climax now which is normal.

A female reader, Tremor Australia +, writes (12 June 2008):

Tremor agony auntIn the most technical sense, they are the same thing.

However, they have different connotations. For me, making love is sex with someone you truly care for and have an emotional connection with.

Sex, on the other hand, is the raw act itself - it doesn't have to have that connection, it's just two horny folk gettin' it on.

Of course, you can 'make love' and 'have sex' with the same person. It all depends on the atmosphere.
