I have to say that if I were to approach someone in a bookstore it would be when they were up and about looking at the books. That way, you could perhaps look at what they are looking at, and say something intelligent about the author or if you've read the book, something interesting about it, and that she should read it.
It also makes you look as if you are an intelligent bloke that has sex appeal too!

Hopefully, your affinity for books and reading is as strong as your love of women....if not, you'll look like a poser. So, have a bit of knowledge, but not too dorky. Start with classic philosophy and fiction. You'll develop your style from there and be able to speak with wisdom.
As a female myself, I can tell you that I never went to Border's with the intention of meeting a guy....although I always thought it would be a better place to meet someone, as opposed to the gym or the grocery store. If you were to approach me, I think it could be done while I was sitting down...that way you could sit beside me (if the vibe was right) and there it is....First Date. Nice job and good luck.
