It's a man's way of saying that he really does fancy you to bits. Whether he totally loves you is another matter, but if his actions show you that he loves you, then he this means he loves you.

You could take it as sweet and protective. Or. You could take it as somewhat possessive. Only you have the knowledge to make that decision.
