Basically an orgasm is your vaginal muscles contracting which sends waves of pleasure through your vagina. Very nice and believe me you will now if you have one.
Your boyfriend is asking if he hurt you when you moan as he is obviously a little inexperienced too. Its fine to moan and most women moan with pleasure naturally and have little control over it, and no its not just at the point of orgasm but all women are different. Tell him that if he ever hurts you then you will say 'OWWW' so that way he can tell the difference between a moan of pleasure and a yelp of pain X

You'll know when you have one.
As LJ001 says, moaning during sex isn't unusual and doesn't necessarily mean an orgasm.
I think orgasm is different for different people - and quite definitely there are different types of orgasm that one person can experience. It's difficult to describe, but for me it has varied from a shuddery, tingly sort of wave right through me to a mind-blowing explosion that left me hardly knowing where I was or what I was doing.

It's hard to describe how it feels, but just.. very pleasurable lol. A lot of people moan throughout the whole of intercourse, not just at their orgasm - everyone's different and should do what feels right for them.
