In Vietnam I think they're being forced to take up Vietnamese names and things in an attempt by the Vietnamese to wipe out their culture. There are similar pogroms and stuff in Laos. Pretty sad story really. I think they were an oppressed minority that then decided to help the US during the Vietnam war and life got really bad for them after that.
I used to be an activist for East Timorese Independence and through that I decided to delve deeper into what was happening in the world. Because 1/3 of the entire East Timorese population were massacred and we never heard anything about it. That's how I heard about the Hmong, the Lakota, the Karen, Congolese pygmies and other indigenous peoples being wiped out.
It's strange for all Americas rhetoric about freedom and hope. What they're doing to the Lakota still is disgusting.

Well Anne Fadiman's book "The wind catches you and you fall down" (which I would highly recommend), about a little Hmong girl called Lia Lee. I believe the Hmong are an East Asian ethnic group. Why do you want to know?
