Basically you become diabetic for 3 weeks.
The Atkins diet is incredibly effective but very unhealthy which is why you should only ever do it as a kick start to a proper healthy eating diet.
Your body needs carbs AND protein to make energy to do things like walk, move, keep breathing while you are asleep etc.
So The atkins is where you live on NOTHING but meat... Protein only.
You sweat more, stink, fart a lot, your poo is horrible, you get spots from all the grease, but the weight falls off as your body is basically starving, but because it's getting fed it doesn't quite understand so doesn't try and ration the fat you have to last long.
You also get NO vitamins or anything your body needs so that's why after 3 weeks, you'll NEED to come off it, and get on a healthy diet with both fruit veg and meat.
It's a great kick start to a normal diet, but 3 weeks is the MAXIMUM you should do it for without having real health dangers. Go and buy his official book.
Or better still, just cut down the number of calories you take in and go jogging / cycling.
Good Luck!! xx

It's not for everyone of course. One of the plusses is that you don't have to starve -- you can always go get a hunk of meat if you're hungry. But it can be very difficult to get enough variety to keep you sane.
Make sure you read Atkins' book before you start, as there's a right way and a wrong way to do it.

Right. Atkins diet relies on meats as the base of your energy, and ignores carbohydrates due to their "instant" energy from breaking it down to sugars (which your body needs).
Your body is healthier wheh it receives a balanced diet of protein (meats, poultry, fish, some nuts/beans), roughage (veg, fruits), sugars (carbohydrates, fruits), vitamins (fruits, veg, some beans), calcium (milk, fish), etc. Atkin diets, however, is a very unbalanced diet, and is banned from UK Hospitals.

It is when you avoid carbs like breads or pasta and eat mostly meats. Lose a lot of weight, but depending on what meats you eat, you could get high cholesterol.
