A female United Kingdom age 41-50, anonymous writes:

I have some difficulty understanding the whole porn and fantasy thing, when men view porn does the fantasy thing mean they just enjoy watching sexual acts being done to other attractive people? I always thought it meant they pick the videos with the people in they find attractive and pretend they are the man having sex with them apparently this isn't the case. I always thought fantasy meant pretending you are having sex with someone. Can anyone give me any ideas what fantasy means in the porn world (when it comes to men) I am a bit confused.

I was surprised at how hard I had to think about this. How to describe exactly how porn works for me?

For one thing, it's absolutely not about appearance, at least not in a positive way. Oh, there are looks that really turn me off -- body art, obesity, surgical enhancement, etc. But I'm not looking at the woman and wishing it was me that was with her, and most times couldn't tell you 10 minutes later what she looked like.

What it is about is the act. There are some acts and some circumstances that just seem to fire the right neurons off. Because they're erotic or forbidden or whatever. I'd give examples but they probably wouldn't make it past the mods, and it probably doesn't matter because it's so highly individual. Is it a fantasy? Sometimes -- I have some fantasies that work for me when I'm not using porn, and sometimes I'll come across a porn clip that is that fantasy, and those clips can be powerful. But more often it's seeing some particular act that is a powerful turn on for me.

Don't know if that's too incoherent to help?

A female reader, person12345 United States +, writes (28 May 2012):

person12345 agony auntWell porn isn't fantasy. It requires no thought or creativity, it is consuming someone else's fantasy as a product. Those actions really happened. So that woman who just had sex without a condom really did just have sex without a condom. Anyone who thinks that things that actually happened is fantasy has their head buried in the sand.

"I always thought it meant they pick the videos with the people in they find attractive and pretend they are the man having sex with them apparently this isn't the case."

The first part generally not as much. The second part yes. Sometimes people will like a certain video because the performer is hot. But often there's just a certain video that just does it for them. Could be a combination of things like attractiveness and the act performed. But the thinking it happened to them is why people like porn. Our brains are just not good at taking what we see and separating them from reality. So when someone is watching sex and stimulating themselves, their brain subconsciously is thinking "hey this is happening." No matter how much people consciously tell themselves it's not reality, that is why people like porn.

A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (28 May 2012):

chigirl agony auntThere are some general false assumptions going on here. "they just enjoy watching sexual acts being done to other attractive people"

This is only partially correct. They like watching sexual acts performed by other people. The level of attractiveness of these people is irrelevant. And, most people in porn are NOT really what the general public describe as attractive. They are more similar to dolls, and have you seen the acting? It's so horrible that calling them actresses is an offense. No, this isn't about acting, or the actresses themselves, or the looks of them. This is all about watching the act.

I mean, most of the men who watch porn aren't attracted to the DUDE in the porn either, but they still get off by watching it. So no, it's not about watching other people have sex (regardless of their level of attraction). It's about watching the act, being sexually stimulated, and getting turned on.

Watching a penis enter a vagina could do the same trick, but it gives more stimulus to watch it in motion. The sounds can also be stimulating. It triggers the brain into getting prepared to have sex, thus giving the man a hard on (or making women who watch porn wet) and putting your body in the "mood" to have sex. Getting horny in other words.

As a woman who watches porn for the exact same reason men do it, I know that it isn't about the level of attractiveness of the people. I don't imagine being them either. I've seen Germain porn where the guy has a huge mustache and leather jacket and all that, but does that mean that's the sort of men I want in bed? Oh God no. But idea, the fantasy, of what was going on in the porn was stimulating.

Then again, if a person is butt ugly I can get turned off, no matter how much I am into the action. If I get turned off by the actors I need to switch porn.

Look at it this way though. Watching animals have sex can also be a sexual stimulus. Not because we want to go bonk that horse. And not because we like animal sex. But, the action they are performing can put us in the mood for sex. If we see someone else get it, we want it to, plain and simple. If you see someone else eat an ice cream you might suddenly want an ice cream yourself. It's the same with porn. Watching other people have sex makes your body want sex as well, and puts you in the "mood" for it. Without being in the mood you will have a very difficult time getting off, as any woman will be familiar with.

Sageoldguy1465 agony auntTo me, this question is the equivalent of asking "How high is "up?"

What motivates people to partake of pornography is a personal choice.... and is little different from what motivates some people to watch "Dancing with the Stars" whilest other people watch "Monday night Football"...

YOU may watch whatever you wish... and what you choose is your choice to make... YOUR'S ONLY!!!!

Have fun....
