I think you are referring to EMPHYSEMA (pronounced: emfiseema)as the other aunts suggested. Emphysema is a form of chronic lung disease often accompanying chronic bronchitis. It is often caused by exposure to tobacco smoke. Here are a couple of links with more information for you.

reader, anonymous, writes (24 February 2007): I have never heard of this word before. Can you tell us how it was used in the sentence, when it was told to you? There is a similar word called 'emphysema' which is a chronic diease of the lungs. Other than that, I have absolutely no idea. Sorry, I could help you out.
