Whatever anyone says, it is not as scarey as everyone makes it out to be! the best advice i can give out is to relax, it makes things alot more comfortable and easier. When getting screened, they usually do a internal exam (the pelvic examination which Jadzia described) which only lasts about 2 mins max, and is slightly uncomfortable but the nurse or doctor who does it will be as gentle possible.
They also take urine and blood samples, which are worth getting as they check for everything Thrush to HIV! (not that im trying to scare you of course!)
The results will be clear in around 2 weeks, depending on the clinic where you are tested.
Hope this helps, and good luck :)

STD is a Sexually Transmitted Disease. STI refers to Sexually Transmitted Infection.
Women must have a pelvic exam with a q-tip used to collect mucus from the cervix. A urine specimen can also be collected by the patient in a cup. Some women's doctors will do this test routinely in the yearly pap exams. You need to talk to your doctor about it.
When donating blood many diseases are screened for including some sexually transmitted ones.
The most important thing is to get checked, if you are having unprotected sex or a condom broke. The sooner treatment happens the better off you will be.
