What do I say to break it off with him?

Question - (8 July 2009) 1 Answers - (Newest, 8 July 2009)
A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

This guy fancied me, and we ended up kissing. I didn't really have chance to think it through, whether I wanted to go out with him or not, so now I am. He said 'I love you' and stupidly, I've now said it back. I think I do love him, but as a friend. I'm not IN love with him.

We are so opposite, in nearly every sense, and I need to end it. But I've never had to break up with someone before, and frankly, I don't know how. He's a nice guy, and preferably I would want to try and be friends still.

How do I break up with him? What do I say, or at least, how do I start it off? I think I'll know what to say once I've started but I don't know what I should say first. ANY advice/help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

QuirkLady agony auntHere's an opener: tell him that he's a nice guy but it's not working out between you two, and that it's best if you see other people.

Good luck.
