Betraying him is the worst you could do, it lowers your self respect as well as.. its betraying someone! Start being honest and break it off nice and clean. This is how to do it: meet up with him in private then say "I don't want to be in a relationship with you any more. This is the end. Bye"

 Just say: My dear, I no longer loves you. I don`t want to keep on this relation but I would love to keep our friendship. Believe me, This hurts me a lot and I will always remember you with love, but I just don't love you that way anymore. I'll understand if you feel angry with me, if you even hate me, but take notice that I will be your friend and nothing more.After that, you might feel like a cruel person for breaking his heart but, he will heal. If you don't love him, don comeback just for pity, it will harm you both. Other way is tell him that you are confused and that you need some time to think about your life and other stuff including the relation. The bad thing is that this way may give him false hope.
