Question - (22 July 2009) 2 Answers - (Newest, 29 July 2009)
A female United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I split up with my ex (we were together for 2 years)nearly a year ago because he stole money from my parents. He still owes me a lot of money and keeps on giving me excuses on why he can't pay me back! I have a new boyfriend and he has a new girlfriend which he is planning to move in with but he has no job. Ive given him loads of time to pay me back and now he is not replying to my text/emails etc, ive tried to threaten him with calling the police but I get nothing.

what else can I do?

Thanks

A female reader, DrPsych United Kingdom +, writes (22 July 2009):

DrPsych agony auntThreats to get the police involved in the situation are not getting you anywhere because he probably knows that they would regard this to be a civil-law matter in the UK. The act of stealing from your parents, however, is a criminal matter and they should report it to the police if that has not already been done. If he is stealing from them, he may steal from other people too and it would be helpful if the police were at least alerted to this public menace for future reference. As for your situation with him, you should seek advice from the Citizens advice bureau as you can make a small claims court application against him for the sum of the debt. It would help if you have evidence of the debt - text messages, emails, bank statements showing cheques to him. If you don't have anything written down where he admits to the debt, write him a letter stating that he owes you X amount and that you want it back by Y date or else you are going to court. Send that letter to him by recorded delivery and then proceed to make a claim at the court (very inexpensive and court costs can be added to his debt so it will cost nothing to you if you win!).
