person12345 agony auntYou can't know what your reaction will be, but no it will not cause you to bleed for a year. Most people report the opposite. You will most likely stop having regular periods and instead get irregular spotting. It is very effective, and allows you to go for a long time without worrying about pregnancy.

The disadvantages are that if you react badly to that hormone, you are kind of stuck with it. Also it leaves a small scar on your arm.

An implant isn't a good idea if you've never been on another hormonal method before, since some women simply don't tolerate hormones well. If you generally tolerate hormones well, then it could be a very good option.

A female reader, aunt honesty Ireland +, writes (12 February 2011):

aunt honesty agony auntEverybody reacts differently to the implant. It can effect your regular periods were you may bleed for two weeks instead of one, or else it might stop your periods completely. It reacts to everyone different. But no you will not be bleeding for a year, if you were to bleed for to long a doctor would need to remove it. That is one of the disadvantages of the implant as it can mess up your cycle. Also just like the pill some medication can stop the implant from working. It also has its possible side effects like everything else you may experience some tenderness in the breasts and also mood swings and spots.

If you are thinking of getting the implant then talk to your doctor about it and he will be able to explain everything fully to you. Hope this helps hunny.
